Accessible tourism will have an international standard

Accessible tourism will have an international standard promoted by the ONCE Foundation, the Spanish Standardization Association (UNE) and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). It is expected to be approved in 2018 after reaching a consensus at the ISO level, and will be published in 2019.

According to the entities involved, the TC 228 Technical Committee responsible for tourism and related services within the framework of ISO (International Organization for Standardization) will develop a global and transversal international standard that includes, first of all, a systematic inventory of standards, Technical criteria, recommendations and existing requirements in the field of accessible tourism.

In addition, recommendations and requirements will be suggested for those segments of the value chain and related activities, whose international standardization in terms of accessibility is still pending.

The future standard will be called ‘ISO 21902. Tourism and related services. Tourism accessible to all. Requirements and Recommendations’ and will provide clear guidelines for tourism planning and destination management.
